Windows

about

Someone asked me what it was like growing up in the 90s, so I wrote this nostaglic riff on growing up; from the bunk technology to the cringe-worthy outfits, this song pulls no punches on the humiliation and glory of youth:

lyrics

Windows

When I used to dial the phone in the basement
I put my finger in the holes then I traced it
In little circles then I did it again and again and again

I like how white plastic turns kinda beige-ish
My computer screen was blue with grey text
Tearing perforated edges off of dot matrix documents

Before we got Windows everything was slow
Spending whole days just picking my nose
My best friend used to pull down other kids pants
My other best friend tried to force me to wear his sister's lipstick

I was really good at being a kid
Stealing candy every chance I got
Throwing tantrums every time I was caught

There was a girl who lived across the street from me
I pulled my pants down and showed her 'cause she asked me
Then I wasn't allowed to go behind that tree anyore

Me and my pal Brennan used to skateboard
With Ricky Vandenburg and the other neighbours
Brennan killed someone with his truck and went to jail in 2016

When we got Windows everything was slow
Waiting ten minutes for the worst porn to load
Try to clear the browser the old fashioned way
Typing random bullshit to try and hide my history and my shame

I was really good at being a kid
Fantasizing about the girls in class
Told my softball team my lazy eye was glass

My first girlfriend was also named Nikki
She never ate her lunch so she gave it to me
She got migraines so bad she fainted every couple of weeks

Around that time I started digging jazz saxophone
I liked that all the best players were dead and gone
I wore a black turtleneck and fedora when I was 17

When we had Windows everything was slow
Trying to flirt with girls on the city bus home
Find 'em in the phonebook and give em a call
Show 'em I can smoke weed get drunk do everything wrong

When we had windows everything was slow
Doing to much but keep it on the low
Party in a pit someone dug in the ground
Running from the cops when they try to shut the whole thing down

I was really good at being a kid
Flipping burgers just to make some scratch
While my boss harassed the girl who worked cash

I was really good at being a kid
Setting fires in the woods at night
Hit a telephone pole with my bike
